Pedalboard Power Calculator

A tuner, a drive, a delay and a reverb draw 283 mA between them (80 + 8 + 100 + 95), all at 9 V. 24 of the supplies below give each pedal its own output. Swap in your own pedals and the table follows.

283 mA in total

  • 9 V: 283 mA from 4 pedals

All 4 pedals are in the total.

Common questions

How do I work out how much power my pedalboard needs?

Add up the mA of every pedal, then check each pedal against a single output. The set above is 80 + 8 + 100 + 95, which makes 283 mA at 9 V.

Is a supply's total current enough to go by?

No. Each output has its own limit. BOSS DD-8 draws 100 mA, so it needs an output rated for at least that, however big the unit's total is.

What if a pedal has no current figure?

It stays out of the total and the result says so. Type the figure from the manual and it counts. We hold a published draw for 266 of the 343 pedals so far.

Can two pedals share one output?

Yes, if their draw adds up to less than the output's rating. Two low-draw analog drives are the usual pair; keep digital pedals on their own output. Pedals that share an output share a ground, so one can pass its noise to the other. An isolated output of its own avoids that.

What about a Quad Cortex or an HX Stomp?

They list a rated adapter figure, 3 A, which is not what they pull. The calculator shows that figure as Rated, leaves it out of the total, and tells you to give the unit its own adapter or a high-current output. The pedal's page has the real draw where we have found one.
