How Pedalboard Fit Is Checked and Sourced

Every count on this site compares the top-view outline of a pedal with the frame of a board, in millimeters. Width must fit. Depth may run 5 mm over. Pedals sit 12 mm apart if you use slim couplers, or 25 mm apart if you use ordinary patch cables, and rows are 15 mm apart.

What is compared

Each pedal is a rectangle, the outline of its enclosure seen from above, and each board is the frame. A board's size is the frame when the maker publishes it, and the deck when it does not; a board page says which. Nothing else is measured: not jacks, knobs or height.

Width is strict

A pedal wider than the frame does not fit, even by a millimeter, because a pedal that sticks out at the side stops a case from closing and catches on stage.

The 5 mm depth allowance

Depth is more forgiving: a pedal may be up to 5 mm deeper than the board. A pedal 2 mm deeper is listed as 2 mm deeper than the board, within the allowance. This 5 mm allowance is ours; a tight case may not close.

Two gaps between pedals

Most pedals have their jacks on the sides, so two plugs sit in the space between neighbors. With slim right-angle couplers that space can be 12 mm. With ordinary patch cables, the flat pancake type, it needs about 25 mm. Every count is given for both. Rows are 15 mm apart.

Power supplies are not counted

The counts leave out a power supply. If yours sits on the board, it takes room from the numbers you read here. Under-board mounting avoids that, but it needs a board with enough clearance underneath.

Upright first, then turned

A pedal is tried upright first, because that is how it is played. Only if it cannot fit upright is it turned by 90 degrees. A treadle, such as a wah or a volume pedal, is never turned: you cannot play it sideways, so it either fits upright or it does not fit.

Where the numbers come from

A size comes from the first source in this list that gives it.

No.SourceHow it is used
1Manufacturer's product or spec pageUsed whenever it gives the size.
2Manufacturer's manualUsed when the product page does not give the size.
3Large retailer spec sheetUsed only when no manufacturer source gives the size.

Every record links to its source and shows the date it was checked. Some makers publish no power figure, and then the record has none.

When the axes are a guess from the shape

Some sources give two numbers without saying which is width and which is depth. For those records the axes were read from the shape of the pedal, and the pedal page says so. If you own one, check it.

When sources disagree

When two sources disagree, we use the maker's figure and note the disagreement on the record.

What is not checked

The counts do not know about plugs sticking out of the front, cable routing, rails or feet under a board, or anything mounted below it. They do not test whether a power supply can run a pedal. Measure those yourself before you buy or build.
